Reed shapers

Reed making is a time consuming occupation. Particularly if you play historical reed instruments, which implies many instruments with non-standard reeds. Reed-shaping tools simplify the task notoriously, as you can see in the video below (thanks to Silke Gwendolyn Schulze for it).

But how to get personalised and precise reed shapers in metal without being a blacksmith? 3D-print them! (yes, it is possible to 3D-print in metal).

The shawm reed-shaper in the video above and the pics below is 3D-printed in steel to personalised measures.

As the pictures show, the printing method is layer-by-layer, and the layers can be seen and felt on the surface in one dimension of the object. This does not disturb the use or cutting process, as you can see in the video.

The production cost of a shaper will depend on its size. For a model of the size shown above it will be around €60. For the first copy of a personalised model additional 3D-modelling costs will be required. Contact us in order to talk about your project and needs.
